Parenting Counseling in Odessa, TX

Has Parenting Become Overwhelming For You?

At Balance Counseling, we’re experts in child development and psychology. As much as we understand the tough parts of growing up, we also know that there is a lot of pressure on you—their parent(s)—to always do the “right” thing when it comes to raising your kids.

If you feel frustrated, overwhelmed, or like you’re falling into concerning patterns, you are not alone. Parenting is a 24/7, round-the-clock job that requires your energy, patience, and resources, and it’s okay to ask for support. Whether your child is experiencing intense emotions or obstacles to their mental health, an outside perspective can help you find new and healthy ways of problem-solving.

Even if things are going relatively well at home, you may struggle with the nagging idea that you’re doing it all wrong or that your child is bored because you’re not constantly entertaining them—a lot of the parents we work with feel this way.

That’s where our therapists come in, offering achievable skills for parenting in a way that aligns with your goals and values. Through counseling, you can take steps toward becoming the parent you want to be.

No Parent Is “Perfect”

The challenges of raising children are seemingly endless—once you’ve finally figured out one stage of development, they’re onto the next stage. And every phase introduces new challenges, whether emotional, social, relational, or academic.

Parents often struggle with stress, frustration, or self-doubt at some point while raising kids; these issues are universal. But it can make a huge difference to learn new tools for making parenting decisions you’re confident in through counseling. Working together with our therapists, you can find parenting solutions that work for you.

There aren’t quick fixes for every single challenge you’ll encounter as a parent, but there are small changes you implement through counseling that allow you to ease the burden of parenting while also ensuring that your child feels safe, loved, and valued.

Balance Counseling Offers Parenting Support And Therapy

The perspective of a therapist can offer life-changing insight on your parenting style and setbacks. Through counseling, you can begin to see that you have more options than being reactive or parenting in the way you were parented.

Our Approach

While we draw on a range of therapy techniques and individualize the process for each client, a significant aspect of our work derives from Daniel Siegel’s model, The Whole Brain Child. Based on the unique wiring of a child’s brain, Siegel’s model gives parents tools for meeting children with empathy rather than frustration when activated.

We’ll also incorporate techniques for mindfulness, boundary-setting, and communication into counseling so that you can feel like you’re parenting in new ways—letting go of the outdated parenting patterns you’ve been falling into.

In addition to individual therapy, we offer Parenting Classes in a group setting to help reinforce skills and build community. You can find out more about our class schedule and group therapy approach here.

Our therapists know this process works! When you have the tools you need to parent differently, you can experience more consistency, joy, and connection in your and your child’s lives. In counseling, the sky is the limit with what you can achieve in your development as a parent, and we’re here to get you started.

Common Concerns Parents Have Before Starting Therapy…

Does the need for counseling mean that my approach to parenting is all wrong?

Going to therapy does not signal that your approach to parenting is all wrong—it signals that you want to be a better parent and establish new, healthier patterns in your family.

This is tough work, and we all have areas of improvement when it comes to parenting. But when your child knows that you want to grow and heal in your parenting, it communicates to them that they are valued and important.

Am I the only one who struggles with anger and frustration toward my kids?

Not at all! So many of the parents that we work with in counseling think that they’re the only ones to struggle with deep feelings of anger, frustration, and inevitably guilt when it comes to their children. But that is simply not the case.

Parenting can be very difficult at times, and many of our therapists have kids themselves. We know what it feels like to fall into parenting patterns we’d rather not demonstrate—and we know how bad it feels to think we’re the only ones. Counseling is designed to give you support and lifelong coping skills, and our classes are especially helpful for finding community.

Are my kids suffering because I am parenting alone as a single mom/dad?

Absolutely not. In our opinion, the quality of time spent is more important than the quantity of time spent; children aren’t automatically set up for success just because they grew up in a two-parent household.

The most important aspect of raising kids is demonstrating that you love them, which involves nurturing healthy attachments, creating effective boundaries, and implementing consequences when needed—all skills you can learn in counseling.
